Dothan City Schools Earns Cognia Systems Accreditation

Dothan City Schools has earned Cognia Systems Accreditation, a nationally recognized distinction that reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to providing students with a high quality education for every student and continuously improving the work happening at DCS. The accreditation was awarded by the Cognia Global Accreditation Commission on June 24, 2026, following an extensive review of the district’s leadership, teaching and learning, student support services, and overall effectiveness.

The achievement marks the culmination of nearly two years of hard work by teachers, administrators, staff, students, families, and community stakeholders. Throughout the process, the district completed a comprehensive self study, analyzed student performance and community feedback, welcomed an external review team into the district, and demonstrated how continuous improvement guides decision making across the district.

“We’re proud to receive this accreditation. It is an important milestone,” said Dr. Garrick Askew, Superintendent of Dothan City Schools. “The accreditation confirms that DCS offers a quality educational program that meets performance and program equivalency standards for schools throughout the United States. The accreditation process also provided us with insight on areas for continued growth, all focused on helping our students succeed!”

During the accreditation process, Cognia recognized Dothan City Schools as a well-managed, student focused district with a strong culture of continuous improvement. The district also earned an Index of Education Quality (IEQ) score of 293 out of 400 and met 100 percent of Cognia’s accreditation requirements.

“This accomplishment belongs to everyone in Dothan City Schools,” said Lee Jacobs, Assistant Superintendent of Accountability and Compliance. “The hard work done by our teachers, staff, administrators, and school leaders will continue to benefit our students for years to come. Accreditation is not the finish line, it is our commitment to continuous improvement.”

The Cognia accreditation remains valid for six years and recognizes Dothan City Schools’ commitment to maintaining high standards while continuously improving opportunities for students.

2026 Graduate Kate Isbell Wins National Art Contest

Dothan City Schools is proud to celebrate Dothan City Virtual School Class of 2026 graduate Kate Isbell, who has been selected as one of 250 student awardees nationwide in the America250 America's Field Trip Contest. The contest invited students from across the country to reflect on what America means to them through original artwork or writing. Kate's award-winning submission earned her a unique opportunity to participate in a behind the scenes educational experience at Yellowstone National Park this summer as part of the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.

America250's America's Field Trip Contest was designed to encourage students to share their perspectives on America's history, culture, and future, while highlighting the talent and creativity of young people across the United States.

"Dothan City Schools is incredibly proud of Kate and this well deserved recognition," said Karris Harmon, Public Relations Officer for Dothan City Schools. "To be recognized on a national level and earn the opportunity to experience one of our country's most iconic landmarks is something truly special. We can't wait to see where Kate's talents take her next."

Through her artwork, Kate displayed a unique perspective that resonated on a national stage. Dothan City Schools is proud to celebrate her accomplishment and this exciting opportunity ahead. Congratulations, Kate!

Dothan City Schools to Host Community Job Fair on July 6

Dothan City Schools is inviting the community to attend an upcoming Job Fair on Monday, July 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Dothan Board of Education, 1665 Honeysuckle Road.

The event is open to the public and is a chance to learn more about the people, programs, and opportunities that make up Dothan City Schools. Representatives from schools and departments across the district will be available to answer questions, share information about current openings, and help attendees take the next step in the application process.

Open positions may include:

Classroom Teachers
Special Education Teachers
Aides
Tutors
Bus Drivers
Food Service Employees
Custodians

Some fully certified positions may be eligible for hiring incentives of up to $3,000.

Dothan City Schools Board of Education Approves Dr. Victoria Washington as Principal of Morris Slingluff Elementary School

The Dothan City Schools Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Victoria Washington as the next principal of Morris Slingluff Elementary School during a special called board meeting held June 15, 2026.

Dr. Washington brings more than two decades of experience in education to her new role. Throughout her career, she has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and educational leader, with a strong focus on student achievement, school improvement, and building positive school cultures where students and staff can both thrive.

Dr. Washington most recently served as an Educational Specialist with the Alabama State Department of Education’s Office of School Improvement, where she supported schools across Alabama through professional development, instructional coaching, and strategic planning. Prior to her state level role, Dr. Washington served as principal of Tipton-Durant Middle School in Dallas County, where she led initiatives that improved academic performance, strengthened family engagement, and expanded opportunities for students.

“Dr. Washington is an experienced leader who believes in the potential of every student,” said Superintendent Dr. Garrick Askew. “Her years of experience, passion for education, and dedication to supporting students, families, and staff make her an excellent addition to Dothan City Schools and Morris Slingluff Elementary.”

Dr. Washington holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from National University and has completed advanced studies in instructional leadership and school administration. She has spent her career empowering educators, and creating learning environments where all children succeed. At Morris Slingluff Elementary School, Dr. Washington looks forward to working alongside students, families, and staff to help every child learn, grow, and thrive.

“I am thrilled to begin this new chapter and bring my student centered approach to Morris Slingluff Elementary School,” said Dr. Victoria Washington. “I look forward to building strong relationships with our students, families, and staff as we work together to keep teaching and learning at the heart of everything we do. My mission is to support both our students and staff so that every child has the opportunity to succeed.”

Dr. Washington will officially begin serving as principal of Morris Slingluff Elementary School on July 1, 2026.
